How to Tell if Antique Maps are Genuine
There is an increase in people fascinated with antique world maps. Collecting antique maps and prints can be a very rewarding and exciting hobby. Maps have always been considered fascinating, and many today are finding out why. Not only are antique world maps interesting, but they’re very beautiful as well. Historic maps are truly a work of art, as any map enthusiast will tell you.
Original antique maps and exact copies alike can be found for great prices. Depending on what time of historic map(s) you want, you may be able to find great deals on them. Just remember that when purchasing an antique map, make sure you buy from a reliable, trustworthy dealer. Be sure to ask them how long they’ve been in the business. Honest dealers usually won’t try to deceive you any. There are many map dealing websites that will allow you to purchase antique world maps online. Sometimes you may be able to find great deals on eBay; just make sure that the seller has a lot of positive feedback. Another thing you should do is take a look at an antique map price guide, so you’ll have an idea of what types of maps you’ll be able to afford.
Keep in mind that it can be very expensive in order to fake an antique map, so most dealers are genuine and honest. They will earn more money in the long run by selling you real antique maps. If you’re still uncertain, though, whether your antique map is real or not, look for clues such as water marks, copyright dates, and blurred lines. Real antique maps obviously won’t contain such features — especially a copyright date from the 1950’s! If it’s hard for you to tell, you can take it to an antique map expert and have them look at it for you. They can usually tell right away.
